1. The “Cheap” Manager

Treat with: free their time for actual thinking.

Red flag: they still push for fast, low-quality output despite having time.

Attempt to treat: talk openly about the trade-offs of “fast + cheap.” When they demand both speed and perfection, it’s usually fear for their own job security. Adjust your strategy accordingly.

2. The “Clueless” Manager

Treat with: give an elevator pitch of your workflow.

Red flag: they are insecure about their blind spot.

Attempt to treat: build rapport – take them to lunch, acknowledge what you respect about them. The goal is trust. If they still resist, let your work (or client testimonials) prove your credibility.

3. The “Hands-Off” Manager

Treat with: be upfront about the volume of top-tier work you can produce without recharging.

Red flag: they give you freedom but show no interest in your life or work.

Attempt to treat: this often signals they’ve mentally checked out, shaped by a mindset where rest equals weakness. Test the waters – ask when they last took a break and offer to handle a quick task for them. Sometimes they need permission to rest too.

As teams go global and leaders bring baggage and trauma from places previously unknown to the western world, we’ll see more of fear-based leadership. But nothing's new under the sun – and there’s always a fix.

We’re already witnessing early versions of this with apps like Canary and Apple's intelligence initiatives, where collective subconscious signals are being transformed into something legible for the masses. But this is just a transitional phase. We are recreating systems that have existed for a long time, systems we've always known. What we’re really doing is preparing for the next stage—where signals and thoughts are received and interpreted emotionally, not verbally.

As Marshall McLuhan once said, "the medium is the message." But in this coming age, the very need for language as a framework is diminishing. Language was scaffolding for the mind to understand complex ideas, but the "building" is nearly complete. With telepathy, we’ll bypass much of the redundancy of language altogether, communicating directly through emotional resonance. This, I believe, is the next big leap forward.

Interestingly, it’s as likely for our mind to be able to capture a moment as it is possible to retain a memory over prolonged period of time.

In crowded markets, brand characters work by leveraging memory, creating a lasting impression amidst the noise, which makes them particularly effective for cyclical products, where brand recall over time is crucial.

But brand characters also excel in environments where the time to capture attention is minimal, such as conferences or ad spots. In these brief moments, the ability of a brand character to make an immediate impact is invaluable.

So if you are in a crowded industry prone to economic cycles like finances, consumer goods, travel or fashion and you want to stay afloat years from now, what should you focus on to make sure your investment in designing a character pays off? Focus on making it hard to forget. Bizarre combinations, puns and humor work best for triggering recall making your brand unforgettable.

Нередко ошибочно-трактующееся как представление о том, что бы чувствовал наблюдающий на месте субъекта, сочувствие является важнейшим навыком для дизайнера, так как обеспечивает лучший результат нашей работы.

Зачем дизайнеру сочувствие?

Навык сочувствия в дизайне нужен для обретения понимания потребностей и эмоциональных стремлений пользователей, которым предлагаются продукты или услуги, над дизайном которых мы трудимся. Продукт или услуга являются связующим звеном между тем, кем потребитель является и тем, кем они хотят быть, и являются способами достижения целей потребителя. Лучшие дизайн-решения представляют из себя синтез инструментов для достижения функциональных целей пользователя с теми эмоциональными образами, которыми человек руководствуется на пути к самосовершенствованию. В итоге сочувствие или эмпатия – качество, обеспечивающее дизайнеру понимание как и что можно улучшить или изменить в жизни другого человека, что они стали успешнее.

Важно, чтобы для дизайнера сочувствие не упрощалось до процесса примерения обстоятельств жизни пользователя на себя. Наша задача – обеспечить идеальный с нашей точки зрения опыт, основанный на уникальном мировосприятии конечного пользователя, коим мы не являемся, для того самого пользователя.

В детстве, после просмотра фильма "Зеленая миля", я задумался о том, что происходит в голове у приговоренного человека. Я решил, что им должно быть страшно, грустно и слышится голос мамы, поющей колыбельную. Весь в слезах и соплях я примерял ситуацию к совокупности своего жизненного опыта, не понимая, что мало кто из приговоренных имел мой опыт детства под опекой любящей матери. Допустив классическую ошибку юного дизайнера, маленький Ваня спутал сожаление с сочувствием, и больше о таких вещах не думал.

Как сочувствие обеспечивает прибыль?

Потребительский опыт — фронт борьбы маркетологов. Сосредоточенность на впечатлении конечного потребителя от использования продукта может сделать его максимально-актуальным и во многих случаях превратить компанию в лидера рынка. Но впечатление будет положительным только в том случае, если бренд знает своего клиента. При том, что навыком сочувствия часто могут пренебрегнуть дизайнеры интерфейса (UI) или графические дизайнеры, предпочитающие основываться в работе на собственных вкусовых предпочтениях и не вникать в контекст вследствие ограниченного контакта конечного результата со всей системой, сочувствие является важнейшим навыком для дизайнеров потребительского опыта (CX) и дизайнеров мироощущений пользователя (UX). В комплексных решениях дизайн, базирующийся на сочувствии, приводит к конкурентному преимуществу предприятия, если контекст пользователя должным образом переведен в создание пользы для потребителя.

Мы можем описать сочувствие как нечто предшествующее ситуации, в которой конечный потребитель дизайна ощущает себя интуитивно-понятым: "ты будто чувствуешь меня." Эта связь способствует нелогичной преданности пользователя, основанной на эмоциях. Как только нам удается создать потребителям ощущение, что их поняли без лишних слов, мы тонко и мощно углубляем связь пользователя с продуктом: они начинают любить, обожать, испытывать страсть, считать его сексуальным и вызывающим привыкание.

Сочувствие позволяет дизайнеру оформить мечту маркетолога в мечту потребителя и превратить положительное впечатление о продукте из желания гендиректора в действительность. В итоге, дизайн с выкрученной на максимум эмпатией становится стратегическим преимуществом, ведущим к наилучшим экономическим последствиям для предприятия. Страсть, испытываемая к продукту, – значение, которое можно измерить, – результат работы дизайн-отдела и имеет прямую корреляцию с финансовыми успехами предприятия.

Как правильно почувствовать клиента?

Убедиться в актуальности нашей работы для жизни пользователя нелегко. Чтобы обезопасить себя от ловушки предположений – заблуждения, что процесс обретения жизненного опыта у других людей идентичен нашему – дизайнеру необходимо быть открытым к тому, что у людей с совершенно иным жизненным опытом может быть иное восприятие нашей работы и что, если что-то понятнее нам, это не обязательно будет понятнее конечному пользователю. Только по-настоящему соединяясь и глубоко взаимодействуя с другими, мы можем понять, что для них действительно важно и как мы можем улучшить их жизни по-настоящему значительно.

Очевидно, что информация о том, как люди живут и взаимодействуют друг с другом, полезна. Это обогащающий жизненный опыт, важный для познания себя, своих близких и окружающей среды. Четкое понимание проблем, с которыми сталкиваются наши пользователи, и понимание общей динамики их существования – необходимое условие для сотворения стоящих, полезных продуктов. Но процесс обретения информации, связанной с пониманием того, что испытывают другие, болезнен и сравним с вживанием актера в сложную роль. Оно требует от нас правильных вопросов и должно быть обретено с большой аккуратностью, чтобы не подвергнуть риску дальнейшую работу. Глубокие исследования подобного рода осуществляются узконаправленными специалистами, использующими методологии, минимизирующие размытие результатов вследствие ограниченного количества вопросов для испытуемого.

Как добавить сочувствие в свой инструментарий и при чем здесь аналитика данных?

Глубокое понимание человеческого поведения – фундаментальный навык нашей профессии. В развитии сочувствия ключевую роль играет проницательность относительно человеческого поведения и психологии. Но сочувствие есть что-то большее, чем просто знания о человеческом поведении. Речь о настройке на других людей, изучении их поведения, болевых точках и жизненном опыте. Тут факторами являются мудрость, эмоциональный интеллект, и просто насмотренность: большой жизненный опыт и обширное образование.

Сочувствие в дизайне сравнимо с воспитанием детей. Мы можем не мешать, помогать, направлять, чувствовать, даже предугадывать желания пользователя. Но стоит различать сочувствие к пользователю и желание прожить за пользователя его опыт. Они сами должны пройти свой путь, даже если он, с нашей точки зрения, полон ошибок. Мы можем лишь помочь им совершить их быстрее, и то, только если они этого хотят.

Как и сто лет назад, дизайнеры трансформируют мышление, которое привело к величайшим успехам той индустрии, в которой они трудятся, но сочувствие добавляет нашей профессии человеко-центричности. Базовое требование к поколению дизайнеров эпохи вседоступной информации – быть абсолютно-актуальными для жизни людей, которым мы служим. У любого человеческого опыта есть контекст, определяющий, в конечном итоге, способ обработки информации пользователем. Сегодня, отвечая на вопрос, почему то или иное дизайн-решение сработало 10, 20 или 100 лет назад, и отвечая заодно на вопрос, почему оно может не сработать сегодня, мы добавляем "для этого пользователя".

Опыт потребителя основывается на его реакции на определенные вводные данные, и поэтому дизайнерам необходимо ставить систему ценностей людей, которым мы служим, в начало списка своих приоритетов. Сочетание знания предмета и любопытства к тому, почему и как все получилось таким, какое оно есть, всегда было супер-способностью дизайнера. Но дисциплина дизайна, в конечном итоге, – служение пользователям.

Сегодня сочувствие синтезирует знания, доступные из аналитики данных и исторического контекста, с чувствительностью относительно проблем, испытываемых людьми, для которых мы делаем нашу работу. Наша работа заключается в том, чтобы создавать вещи, которые они полюбят, к которым будут испытывают страсть, и дать продуктологам переживать за скорость релизов, а финансистам за финмодели.

Looking for a future without conflict, we asked ourselves: What unites us? Where do we all want to go, what do we all crave? Unsurprisingly, peace and peaceful development were top of the list, like two stars in a night sky guiding us all toward a common future. We didn’t quite get there in the last 70 years. There’s still conflict, inequality and injustice in this world. Things are improving for many, but they could’ve been better.

Impatience, pride and greed are still slowing us down, just like they did before the two wars of the last century. Impatience, pride and greed lead to conflicts of one wishing to possess what another has. Of one wishing to keep more for themselves, rather than sharing prosperity with their neighbors and building up armed forces to protect their fortunes. Conflicts that lead to systems designed with unjust treatment of humans at its core, leading to injustice that fuels conflict anew in a vicious cycle. Impatience, pride, greed – all forms of fear. Fear of missing out, fear of “losing”, fear of being “last”.

How do we replace fear with love? How do we design love into the systems relying on fear for so long, systems that guide us in our daily lives both globally as well as in local communities. Is this our calling? If we can do that, will we ever forget that all humans are born free and equal in dignity and rights and, endowed with reason and conscience, all act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood?

Taking a gap year to travel is a common activity for high school graduates from countries associated with the Global North and the Western World. Travel exposes them to cultures and knowledge of the world. This is a fundamental advantage with lifelong compounding effects, an advantage over those from the Third World and developing countries.

Historically and to this day, we saw financial inequality as the key driver of this phenomena. But the financial system has not failed us. Indeed, the low-cost airline tickets, that unlocked our youth to exchange ideas globally, were achieved because of the global financial system, not despite it.

What instead has prohibited those from the Global South to be exposed to cultures around the world is the inequality of citizenship rights, specifically inequality of rights granted to different passport holders.

These rights allow a US citizen to travel freely to Greece, Uganda or Japan. The same institution grants Russian citizens free access to South Korea, South Africa or Chile.

And the same institution of citizenship prohibits free travel to most countries for citizens of Ethiopia, Vietnam and the Palestinian territories.

As the woke movement pursues equity, the need for diversity and originality of thought is huge. With just distribution of knowledge in mind, how does one justify national borders and existing freedom of passage rights?

At a different time it was recently-assembled, sitting in my tiny apartment in Seattle. Everything about it felt new and exciting. It felt like jazz music. Mysterious, different, cool, smart, ever-changing.

We took the couch with us as we departed the gloomy Northwest a year later and headed back to California. It did not quite fit.

It reminded us of our old ways and I wanted to get rid of it. It was a snob who didn’t want to change. Someone who knew all the right people and bought all the books. Someone who didn’t know how to laugh, tell a joke or enjoy the weather.

It rained today in Marina del Rey. As the fires rage on in Pacific Northwest, my couch is a reminder to me that everything changes. It’s a wise couch now, it’s been places and it has no reason to pretend it’s something it’s not. I love this couch. I hope it’ll be here for a while.

Because right in the preface, the context is set for those reading to believe that “our potential adversaries’” actions have significantly increased the likelihood of warfare in the space domain. The claim is followed by a statement that only military force can provide security and defense. Finally, peace and prosperity for free people, not all people, just free people in every corner of the world, must be protected from those who would wish to harm them.

Are we a global power? What needs to happen for us to become a global peacekeeper? Is there any other way to secure peaceful use of space than to be the stick-carrying power deciding which people are free and which aren’t?

Let’s do a thought experiment. If run most efficiently, a business eventually becomes extremely profitable. It also becomes indispensable, since people must be willing to continue to come. That, in theory, will make its stock as close to risk-free investment as a US government bond. Let’s assume the barrier to entry is so high, anyone who could do something to compete with the company works there. It acquired all of the competitors.

When that becomes a reality, does the society have a moral right to intervene? To answer no is to say that pursuing shareholder value at any cost, including altering the fabric of society itself, is right. So instead, how about we focus on the ground this moral right would stand on.

Capitalism is an interesting beast. It’s sort of a free and anonymous set of interactions.

Does a society nationalize the business?

Let it continue to run?

Divest it as needed, if possible?

Or let it own a share of market?

Leading all smaller entrepreneurs to a realization that anything that will be done in, say, social, will be owned by Facebook. Brands have potential to take over moments of life you associate with the values brand represents. Technology is a tool like any any other. Can be used for both good and bad.

I don’t hate Vladimir Putin. In my humble opinion life dealt him one of the hardest hands possible. In fact, I see him as one of the few who can steer Russia away from the prospects of a bloody civil war.

Russia isn’t America. And it shouldn’t be! Its unique history, culture and law makes the freedoms granted to US citizens impossible to apply and we shouldn’t forget that. But we must know that under God no one person has the right to privatize truth. No ruler has the right to absolute power without accountability to those ruled over.

Vladimir, you must let the governed be free in expressing their distrust for the government! What are you afraid of? Say their names. Let them protest. Let them be heard.

Debate them. If you are right, you won’t be defeated. The nation demands answers and proper discourse. But if you are in fact afraid of defending your truth, then you have failed. You have failed your country, your citizens and your self. You’ve failed as a leader and as a president and you must resign immediately.

What will your legacy be, Mr. President? Defend your truth. The world is watching. An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Lord have mercy on us all.
